History of the Fishcreek Congregation:The seedbed of what was to become the Fishcreek Nazarene Worship Center was the profound concern of a Nazarene minister from Iowa, Rev. Ray Marvin, and a small group of laypersons who began prayer meetings during the early weeks of 1917. The German Music Hall was rented as the congregation grew. On June 12, 1926, a deed was recorded transferring ownership of the old North Hill Methodist Episcopal church property, at North Howard and Tallmadge, to the First Church of the Nazarene of Akron for the sum of one dollar ($1.00). On November 3, 1917, the church congregation was formally organized with 20 charter members. Rev. & Mrs. Homer Elliot was the Pastor. Only four other churches on the present East Ohio District were organized earlier. In succeeding years, exceptional growth made it possible for sixteen other churches in the area to be pioneered with the support of First Church through members transferred and finances. In 1949, under the leadership of Rev. C.D. Taylor, a beautiful new sanctuary was built at the North Hill location. Twenty years later, in 1969, Rev. Floyd O. Flemming led in the erection of a spacious educational facility. In 1978, the decisions were implemented to relocate the church and welcome the merger with Rolling Acres Church of the Nazarene. The relocation process proved to be a long and sometimes painful one. Members and friends, however, maintained a dedicated and patient commitment to the larger mission of the church. In the fall of 1985, the Tallmadge Avenue property was finally sold. IN a series of events that were surely providential, the Stow property became available to us. The first services were held December 15, 1985. IN the succeeding months, a master plan for the development of this property was prepared. ON November 8, 1987 the new $240,000 addition to the already existing building was dedicated. Under the leadership of Rev. Randy McClurg, growth led to a vision of a new Worship Center that was completed early in 2003. It is a beautiful, $2,000,000 project done in faith. Change in focus and location has led to a name change that is to be complete in June of 2004, to the Fishcreek Nazarene Worship Center. The events that are before us match the challenges of the past. We are committed to progress and growth. There is a will among us to share in the enlargement and enhancement of what has been an illustrious past. Our future is assured by the promises of God who still leads triumphantly. The past does not, and must not overshadow the vision of our service for God's glory in the days ahead. This is a great church with a great future!
